Lab-grown diamonds are made of crystallized carbon and have the same chemical composition, crystal structure, optical properties, and physical properties as natural diamonds—their origin is what makes them different.

Myth

The difference generally requires advanced testing.

Lab-grown diamonds and natural diamonds appear the same to the eye. Specialized equipment must be used to determine their origin. A diamond’s certification will also identify and classify it.

How diamonds are grown

High pressure, high temperature

Conditions inspired by diamond formation beneath the earth.

HPHT places a diamond seed and a carbon source inside a specialized press. Extreme pressure and high temperature allow carbon to crystallize onto the seed, forming a new diamond crystal that can later be cut and polished.
